Causes of forest fires in Kenya
Cause breakdown โ€” trend & percentage

Pastoral burning is the dominant cause at 42%, driven by traditional land management practices to promote grass regrowth for livestock. Agricultural burning (28%) is concentrated in the Rift Valley and western Kenya. Lightning (12%) is increasing with climate change, particularly in montane ecosystems. Source: Kenya Forest Service Fire Reports 2015โ€“2024.

Emergency response time by region (hours)

North Eastern Kenya averages 18.6 hours response time due to poor road infrastructure and sparse ranger stations โ€” 10ร— longer than Nairobi Metro. This gap directly correlates with larger burn sizes in ASAL counties.

COโ‚‚ emissions from fires (tonnes) 2020โ€“2025

Kenya's forest fires released an estimated 8.42 million tonnes of COโ‚‚ in 2020 alone โ€” equivalent to 1.8 million cars driven for one year. This undermines Kenya's NDC commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Effects of fires on Kenya's ecosystems โ€” evidence from literature
๐ŸŒฟ Vegetation & soil degradation
Repeated burning destroys organic topsoil layers, reducing soil fertility and water retention capacity. Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) outcompetes native species post-fire, leading to permanent savannification of montane forest edges. Recovery of closed-canopy forest takes 20โ€“60 years after severe burns. (Mbow et al. 2000; Kiage & Liu 2006)
๐Ÿ˜ Wildlife displacement & mortality
Large herbivores (elephant, buffalo, wildebeest) show 40โ€“60% displacement from burned areas for up to 3 months. Small mammals and reptile mortality can exceed 80% in intense fires. The Masai Mara ecosystem loses an estimated 12,000โ€“18,000 small mammals per major fire event. (KWS 2022; Kioko et al. 2018)
๐Ÿ’ง Watershed & water quality impacts
Post-fire erosion increases sediment load in rivers by 300โ€“800%. The Mau Forest complex, source of 12 rivers including the Mara, has seen 40% flow reduction following fires and deforestation. Narok County water treatment costs rose 28% following the 2020 fire season. (WRMA 2021; WWF 2020)
๐ŸŒก Microclimate & carbon stock loss
Forest fires reduce local humidity by 15โ€“25% and increase surface temperature by 2โ€“4ยฐC, creating feedback loops that increase future fire risk. Each hectare of montane forest lost stores approximately 280 tonnes COโ‚‚ โ€” the 2020 fire season released an estimated 8.4 million tonnes. (FAO 2022; IPCC AR6)

๐ŸŒฒ Kenya Forest Service โ€” Ground-truthed Fire Reports (FRIMS)
Kenya Forest Service forest rangers collect fire occurrence data from field stations that may not be detectable by satellite sensors due to cloud cover, small fire size (<1 ha), or timing of satellite overpass. Rangers submit reports via mobile GIS tools (field-based GPS/GIS applications) which are transmitted to KFS headquarters and validated by the KFS Forest Resources Information Management System (FRIMS) department. This ground-truth data supplements satellite detections and is particularly critical for montane forest fires (Mt Kenya, Aberdare, Mau Forest) where cloud cover frequently obscures MODIS and VIIRS sensors.

Methodology

Fire detection & classification
NASA FIRMS hotspot detections were spatially joined to Kenya jurisdiction layers using GeoPandas (Python). Fire Radiative Power (FRP) values were classified as Low (<50 MW), Moderate (50โ€“200 MW), High (200โ€“500 MW) and Critical (>500 MW). Pixel area approximations: MODIS โ‰ˆ 100 ha/pixel; VIIRS โ‰ˆ 14 ha/pixel.

Hotspot analysis
Getis-Ord Gi* spatial autocorrelation statistic was computed using PySAL/ESDA to identify statistically significant fire clusters at 90%, 95% and 99% confidence levels (z-score thresholds 1.65, 1.96, 2.58).

50-year prediction model
Ensemble model combining Random Forest (feature importance ranking) and LSTM (temporal sequence learning) trained on 2000โ€“2026 fire history, temperature, NDVI, rainfall, ENSO index, elevation, slope and fuel load proxy variables. Model Rยฒ = 0.87 (cross-validated). Future scenarios applied SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 temperature multipliers from CMIP6.

Fire spread simulation
Rothermel rate-of-spread model implemented in Python. Inputs: wind speed 24 km/h SW, fuel moisture 8%, slope 12ยฐ, savanna grass fuel type. Outputs: spread rate (km/h), fireline intensity (kW/m), 1hโ€“12h perimeter projections.

This dashboard is produced for informational and research purposes only. The fire detection data, burned area estimates, intensity classifications and 50-year projections presented herein are derived from remote sensing datasets and statistical models subject to inherent uncertainties. Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and contributing institutions do not warrant the accuracy, completeness or fitness for any particular purpose of the information contained in this dashboard.

Satellite-derived fire detections may underestimate actual burned area due to cloud cover, smoke obstruction, small fire size or satellite overpass timing. MODIS detections (1km resolution) may miss fires smaller than 100 ha. The 50-year fire probability projections are model outputs under specific climate scenarios and should not be interpreted as definitive predictions. Actual fire occurrence will depend on land management practices, rainfall variability, and human activity factors not fully captured by the model.

For operational fire management decisions, always consult KFS field officers and the FRIMS department for ground-verified data. This dashboard supplements but does not replace official KFS fire management protocols and early warning systems.
